Why does the cost of IVF vary so much?

IVF is one of the most effective forms of assisted reproduction technology, yet there is no “one-size-fits-all” IVF treatment. This is the reason why IVF treatment costs vary so much.

The definition of in-vivo Fertilisation (IVF) sounds relatively simple; IVF is a process where an egg is fertilized by a sperm outside the body, in a laboratory. It is anything but simple. IVF is a rather complex multi-step process and often performed as a last resort for those who have no success with less invasive alternatives such as intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Variations in IVF treatments contribute to variations in cost

Most people do not realize that IVF treatment needs to be tailored to the couple’s circumstances and infertility diagnosis. Let’s talk about the first stage of IVF called ovulation induction which requires medications to stimulate egg production. Some women may only require to inject themselves once a day, others three times a day. As a treatment involving medications, the overall cost of medications will depend on the amount and dosage required.

This is why the cost of medications is often excluded from the IVF price. In countries like Australia, some of the cost may be covered by Medicare, the country’s healthcare scheme.

As a wide range of factors and conditions can contribute to infertility, IVF treatments may be more straightforward for some, but more complicated for others.

For example, one couple with male fertility issues such as low sperm count or poor sperm function will require additional assistance. A technique called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) allows one sperm to be injected directly into the egg to overcome male fertility problems. The cost of IVF ICSI procedure can be an extra US$800 – US$2,500 in the United States. In Australia, it will be an addition of approximately US$1,000.

Keep in mind that sometimes there is no reason why a couple is not able to conceive. However, which is one of the most effective forms of assisted reproduction technology.
